Description
Turbo Snails (AKA Mexican Turbo snails) are known for their impressive cleaning
abilities in reef tanks. These small herbivore snails work diligently at removing algae
from both aquarium glass and rock aquascape. In their quest for algae, Turbo Snails
have a tendency to be a bit of a bulldozer, sometimes knocking over lighter rocks or
coral frags as they move.
In your *saltwater aquarium, its important to provide Turbo Snails with ample space
for grazing and hiding. These peaceful snails should be kept with non-aggressive tank
mates to avoid predation. Note: Turbo snails are unable to self-right if they flip over.
Without assistance to flip back over, their survival is at risk, and they may become easy
targets for predators like peppermint shrimp, hermit crabs and wrasses.
Turbo snails do have specific Calcium needs and are sensitive to high nitrate levels.
Proper calcium levels are essential for their shell development. The turbo snail is best
kept 1 for every 10 gallons of water or more, unless remediating a serious algae
problem in which case you could stand a few more. Keep in mind they are strictly
herbivores and will likely starve in aquariums where there is not enough algae built up
on the rocks, supplementing their diet with dried seaweed is beneficial.
