Description

Corythoichthys intestinalis

The Dragonface Pipefish, also known as the Scribbled Pipefish, is a slender, elongated reef fish with a pale yellow body patterned with dark, wavy bands and intricate markings. Males are especially distinctive, possessing a brood pouch beneath the tail where they carry fertilized eggs until hatching, while females are slightly smaller with less pronounced markings. This species typically grows to about 6 inches (16 cm), making it a unique and manageable addition to marine aquariums. In the wild, Dragonface Pipefish are found in shallow sandy areas, rubble zones, and reef flats throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, usually at depths of 20–68 meters. They are bottom-dwelling carnivores, feeding primarily on small benthic invertebrates such as copepods, amphipods, and isopods. Males may exhibit mild territorial behavior, but the species is generally peaceful and can be kept singly or in pairs. In the aquarium, Dragonface Pipefish require a well-established tank with plenty of live rock and a thriving copepod population. Sandy substrates and ample hiding spaces allow them to feel secure and display natural foraging behavior. They may gradually accept frozen or pelletized foods, but patience and consistent feeding are essential. Considered reef-safe, Dragonface Pipefish do not harm corals or invertebrates. With proper tank conditions, attentive feeding, and plenty of hiding places, the Dragonface Pipefish’s elegant form, striking markings, and calm demeanor make it a rewarding choice for experienced marine aquarists.
