Description

Centropyge bicolor

Centropyge angels are favorites with hobbyists due to their small adult size, bold coloration, and active personalities. The Bicolor Angelfish is instantly recognizable with its striking split coloration—deep blue on the front half of the body and bright yellow on the rear. While visually stunning, this species can be more aggressive than some other dwarf angelfish and may be territorial toward other angelfish or similarly shaped fish, especially in smaller aquariums. Bicolor Angelfish generally adapt well to captive diets and will accept a wide variety of prepared foods. A varied feeding regimen offered at least twice daily is recommended for long-term success. In the wild, they graze on filamentous algae, sponges, tunicates, and other benthic organisms, so foods containing algae and sponge matter are strongly encouraged. Their natural feeding behavior includes coral nipping, making the Bicolor Angelfish not considered reef safe, particularly with stony and soft corals. Centropyge bicolor grows to approximately 6 inches in length and requires larger systems than many other dwarf angels, with aquariums of 75 gallons or more recommended. This species is found throughout the Indo-Pacific, inhabiting coral-rich lagoon and outer reef environments, where it shelters among rockwork and reef slopes at depths reaching up to about 60 meters.
