Description

Serranus baldwini

The Lantern Basslet is a small, vibrant reef fish prized for its striking coloration and interesting behavior. Adults have a pale body marked with dark orange to black oblong blotches and a series of black spots along the lower flank. This species often hovers beneath reef overhangs or within caves, adding a dynamic and visually engaging presence to the aquarium. Lantern Basslets typically grow to about 4.5 inches (11.5 cm), making them a manageable and attractive choice for marine hobbyists. In the wild, they inhabit shallow reefs of the western Atlantic, including southern Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. They prefer rocky or weedy areas and often associate with turtle grass beds. Juveniles may use empty conch shells or crevices for shelter, and adults are mildly territorial, feeding on small benthic invertebrates such as caridean shrimp and tiny fish. In the aquarium, Lantern Basslets thrive in well-established tanks with plenty of live rock, caves, and hiding spots that mimic their natural environment. They are carnivorous and require a diet of finely chopped fresh or frozen marine foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, fish, and squid, ideally fed multiple times daily. Considered reef-safe, Lantern Basslets do not harm corals or invertebrates. With proper care, their vivid coloration, small size, and engaging behavior make them a rewarding addition for both beginner and experienced marine aquarists.
