Description

Centropyge multispinus

Centropyge angels are favorites with hobbyists due to their small adult size, and hardy disposition. The Multispine Angelfish is admired for its blueish black body accented with fine vertical striping and contrasting blue highlights along the fins. Though not as commonly seen as some other dwarf angelfish, it is a desirable species for aquarists seeking something a bit more unique. Like other dwarf angelfish, Centropyge multispinus can be territorial and may show aggression toward other angelfish or similarly shaped fish, especially in confined spaces. These angelfish are generally good eaters and will accept a wide range of prepared foods. A varied diet fed at least twice daily is recommended. In the wild, they graze on filamentous algae, sponges, tunicates, and other benthic organisms, so diets that include marine algae and sponge-based foods are ideal. Their natural feeding behavior may include occasional coral nipping, meaning the Multispine Angelfish is considered reef safe with caution. Centropyge multispinus typically grows to about 6 inches in length and is well suited for aquariums of 70 gallons or larger with ample live rock for grazing and shelter. This species is found throughout the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the Indian Ocean, where it inhabits coral-rich reef slopes and rocky areas at depths reaching up to approximately 60 meters.
