Description

Serranus tortugarum

The Chalk Basslet is a small, peaceful reef fish admired for its subtle yet attractive coloration and active schooling behavior. Adults have a bluish to lavender body accented with orange to reddish vertical bars that become more pronounced in good lighting. Unlike many other basslets, Chalk Basslets are naturally social and often gather in groups above rubble or seagrass beds, adding motion and harmony to the aquarium. They typically grow to about 3 inches (7.5 cm), making them a compact and manageable choice for marine hobbyists. In the wild, this species inhabits shallow reefs of the western Atlantic, including southern Florida, the Bahamas, and throughout the Caribbean. They are commonly seen swimming in loose aggregations over sand flats, rocky zones, and turtle grass meadows, where their numbers provide protection from predators. In the aquarium, Chalk Basslets thrive in well-established tanks with plenty of rockwork, caves, and open swimming space. They do best when kept in small groups, which brings out their natural schooling tendencies. Carnivorous by nature, they require a varied diet of finely chopped fresh or frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and krill, offered multiple times daily. Considered reef-safe, Chalk Basslets do not harm corals or ornamental invertebrates. Hardy, colorful, and engaging, they are an excellent addition for both beginner and experienced aquarists seeking a peaceful and active fish for the community reef tank.
