Paracheilinus angulatus
The Royal Flasher Wrasse is a vibrant and energetic showstopper, bursting with iridescent color and personality. A stunning addition to any reef aquarium, this species is especially known for the spectacular fin displays performed by males during courtship and territorial displays—flashing vivid hues of red, orange, and electric blue in quick, dazzling bursts. Males are typically larger and more colorful than their female counterparts. Peaceful and reef-safe, the Royal Flasher Wrasse thrives in well-established aquariums with plenty of open swimming space and rock for exploration. Due to their tendency to jump, a tightly fitting, escape-proof lid is highly recommended. Unlike some wrasses, Paracheilinus species do not bury themselves in sand; instead, they wedge into cracks, crevices and rockwork at night for shelter. They readily accept most carnivorous foods, including fresh or frozen mysis shrimp, squid, clams, and other meaty preparations. Reaching up to 3 inches in length, this wrasse requires a minimum tank size of 50 gallons. In the wild, it is found throughout the Indo-West Pacific—from Indonesia to the Philippines—typically inhabiting rubble zones of coastal and offshore reefs at depths of up to 130 feet.
