Description

Zoramia leptacantha

The Longspine Cardinalfish is a graceful and peaceful reef fish that adds both charm and activity to a marine aquarium. Adults display a translucent silver body with subtle vertical iridescent blue lines on the head and front of the body, tall first dorsal fin spines, and striking blue eyes, giving them a delicate and elegant appearance. Like other cardinalfish, they are nocturnal and spend much of their time hovering near rockwork, caves, or under ledges. An aquarium with plenty of live rock and shaded hiding spots is essential to replicate their natural environment. Longspine Cardinalfish typically grow to about 2.4 inches (6 cm) and are best suited for tanks of 20 gallons or larger. They are peaceful toward other fish and thrive in small groups. A tight-fitting lid is recommended, as they are known to jump. In the wild, this species inhabits shallow inshore reefs of the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, Mozambique Island, Samoa, Tonga, and Micronesia, where they are commonly seen hovering near coral branches and rocky crevices. They are primarily planktivorous, feeding naturally on zooplankton and small crustaceans. In captivity, they thrive on a diet of enriched frozen foods such as mysis and brine shrimp, as well as finely chopped meaty preparations. Feeding twice daily helps maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health. Considered reef-safe, Longspine Cardinalfish do not harm corals or invertebrates, and their peaceful schooling behavior makes them both a visually appealing and functional addition to any reef aquarium.
