Description

Protoreaster nodosus.

The Chocolate Chip Starfish gets its name from the dark brown spots on its body,
resembling chocolate chips sprinkled on a cookie. In terms of habitat, the Chocolate
Chip Sea Star prefers a spacious *saltwater aquarium that replicates its natural
environment, complete with a deep, mature sand bed.

Its a hardy species but, like many invertebrates, requires clean water with low nitrate
levels. This sea star is best housed in large tanks with non-aggressive fish, as its slow
movement makes it vulnerable to predators like Triggerfish and Pufferfish. Its important to note that they are **not reef safe, as adults may feed on soft corals, sponges, and other starfish. Due to their potential size, reaching up to 15 inches, they are ideal for FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) aquariums.

The coloration of the Chocolate Chip Sea Star can vary from light brown to reddish,
blue, white, or yellow, depending on its geographical origin. When introducing them to
an aquarium, the drip acclimation method is recommended to prevent shock from
sudden changes in water conditions. They should never be exposed to air, and its
crucial to avoid copper-based medications and most anti-parasitic treatments.

To keep your Chocolate Chip Sea Star healthy, you can feed them with frozen food like
the WWC Reef Mix, or a mix of seafood like clams, shrimp, and squid.
