Acanthurus pyroferus

The Lemon Tang, also known as the Mimic Surgeonfish, is a vibrant reef fish with a bright yellow body that adds a splash of color to any aquarium. Adults feature an orange patch near the base of the pectoral fins, a white band around the mouth, and a dark chin stripe. Juveniles are also bright yellow and often mimic certain species of pygmy angelfish depending on their location. This species typically grows to about 10 inches (25 cm), making it a manageable and eye-catching addition to marine aquariums. In the wild, Lemon Tangs inhabit lagoons and seaward reefs in the Indo-Pacific, favoring areas with mixed coral, rock, and sandy substrates at depths of 5–40 meters. They are primarily herbivorous, grazing on algae and detritus throughout the day. Males may show mild territorial behavior, but the species is generally peaceful and can be kept singly or in groups. In the aquarium, Lemon Tangs require a well-established tank with plenty of live rock and a thriving algae population. Sandy substrates and hiding spaces help them feel secure and allow natural grazing behavior. They may gradually accept frozen or pelletized foods, but consistent feeding is essential. Considered reef-safe, they do not harm corals or invertebrates. With proper tank conditions, attentive feeding, and ample hiding spaces, the Lemon Tang’s bright coloration, active behavior, and generally peaceful nature make it a rewarding choice for experienced marine aquarists.
