Description

Amphiprion frenatus

The QM Labs Tomato Clownfish, also known as the Red Clownfish or Tomato Anemonefish, should be added to a well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock structure and open swimming space. Renowned for its hardiness and bold personality, this species is reef safe, beginner-friendly, and one of the most recognizable marine aquarium fish in the hobby. Adults display a deep red to reddish-orange body with one or more white head stripes that may vary in intensity depending on origin and age, while juveniles are typically brighter orange and gradually develop richer coloration as they mature. Tomato Clownfish can grow to nearly 5 inches (12 cm) in length and thrive in aquariums of 30 gallons or larger. Like all anemonefish, Amphiprion frenatus forms a remarkable symbiotic relationship with sea anemones. They rely on their host anemone for shelter and protection, while providing food particles, stimulation, and cleaning in return. In turn, the anemone benefits from the clownfish’s activity and protection from potential predators. They will often adopt a suitable anemone fairly quickly in captivity (with the exception of unsuitable species such as Condylactis), creating a fascinating natural display of mutualism within the aquarium. Tomato Clownfish can be territorial, especially around their chosen host anemone, and may defend their space against intruders. Thanks to advances in aquaculture, this species is widely available in captive-bred forms and may exhibit slight variations in coloration and pattern depending on genetics. They readily accept prepared foods such as pellets, flakes, mysis shrimp, and other high-quality frozen marine diets. Clownfish are also known for their unique social structure and ability to change sex. In the wild, groups are organized by a strict hierarchy with the largest individual functioning as the dominant female. If the female is lost, the dominant male will change sex to take her place, ensuring the continuation of the group. *Please note: The photo is a representation of the variant of clownfish you will receive. Younger specimens may not exhibit the full adult color, and may take time to fully develop certain colors and patterns which can differ based on the genetics of the parents.
