Apogon dovii
Tailspot Flame Cardinalfish is a peaceful and attractive reef-associated species valued for its bold patterning and calm disposition. Adults display a silvery-white body accented by prominent dark vertical bands and subtle yellow to bronze highlights on the fins, creating a striking appearance that stands out under aquarium lighting. Like many cardinalfishes, this species is most active during the evening and nighttime hours, spending much of the day hovering beneath ledges, among branching corals, or within rocky crevices. An aquarium with ample live rock, caves, and shaded retreat areas will help provide the security these fish prefer. Dovii's Cardinalfish typically grows to about 4 inches in length and is best maintained in aquariums of 30 gallons or larger. They are generally peaceful toward other tankmates and can often be kept singly or in compatible groups when sufficient space and shelter are available. In the wild, Apogon dovii inhabits coral reefs and rocky coastal habitats throughout the tropical eastern Pacific, ranging from the Gulf of California to Peru and the Galápagos Islands. During daylight hours they commonly shelter in protected areas before emerging to feed on small planktonic prey carried by ocean currents. Carnivorous in nature, Dovii's Cardinalfish readily accepts a varied diet consisting of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and other high-quality frozen or prepared marine foods. Regular feedings help maintain healthy growth, coloration, and overall vitality. Considered reef-safe, this species typically ignores corals and ornamental invertebrates, making it an excellent choice for peaceful community reef aquariums where its elegant behavior and distinctive markings can be fully appreciated.
