Description

Halichoeres chrysus

Yellow Chrysus Wrasse is a vibrant, reef-safe species known for its bright yellow coloration, active personality, and natural pest control abilities. A favorite among aquarists, this hardy fish adds both color and utility to a peaceful community reef tank. Males typically feature a black spot on the front of the dorsal fin, while females may display a yellow-edged spot in the same area and sometimes a small black spot near the tail. These markings can vary with age and sex, making each specimen unique. Yellow Wrasses thrive in aquariums with plenty of live rock, providing hiding spaces such as caves and crevices. A deep sandy substrate is essential, as they bury themselves at night or when frightened. A secure, tight-fitting lid is also recommended, as they are known jumpers. This species is peaceful, reef-safe, and gets along well with most tankmates. It is carnivorous, feeding on a variety of frozen foods like mysis and brine shrimp, along with high-quality pellets and flakes, ideally offered 2–3 times daily. In addition to their beauty, they offer functional benefits by helping control pests like flatworms and bristle worms. The Yellow Chrysus Wrasse can reach up to 5 inches in length and should be housed in an aquarium of at least 75 gallons. In the wild, they are found around the Christmas Islands, Southern Japan, and New South Wales, typically along rubble slopes and reef edges at depths of up to 200 feet.
