Description

Macropharyngodon meleagris

Leopard Wrasses are beautiful saltwater fish known for their spotted patterns and colorful markings, making them an eye-catching addition to a marine aquarium. They require a mature aquarium of at least 100 gallons with a temperature of 72–78°F, a pH of 8.1–8.4, and a salinity of 1.023–1.026. Provide plenty of rocks for grazing and a deep sand bed, ideally 2–3 inches or more, where they can bury themselves to sleep and hide when frightened. Leopard Wrasses are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans and other tiny invertebrates, so offer frequent feedings of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and other suitable meaty foods. They can be peaceful with compatible tank mates but are often challenging to keep because they may arrive stressed, refuse prepared foods, and require an established aquarium with abundant natural food. They are generally reef-safe and best suited for experienced saltwater aquarists who can provide stable conditions and a consistent food supply. The Leopard Wrasse naturally occurs in the Indo-Pacific from Cocos-Keeling Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean to western Pacific and islands of Oceania up to 60 meters deep.
