Nemateleotris decora
The Purple Firefish, commonly known as the Decorated Firefish, is an elegant and peaceful reef fish admired for its striking coloration and graceful swimming behavior. Adults display a brilliant blend of lavender, purple, yellow, and white hues, with an elongated dorsal fin that gives the species its distinctive and refined appearance. These dartfishes spend much of their time hovering just above the substrate or near rockwork, retreating quickly into burrows or crevices when threatened. An aquarium with plenty of live rock, caves, and secure hiding places is essential to help them feel comfortable and reduce stress. The Decorated Firefish typically reaches about 4 inches (10 cm) in length and is best suited for aquariums of 20 gallons or larger. They are generally peaceful and make excellent community fish, though they may become territorial toward other firefish unless kept as a compatible pair. A tight-fitting lid is highly recommended, as this species is an exceptional jumper and can easily escape through small openings. In the wild, Nemateleotris decora inhabits reef slopes and rubble zones throughout the Indo-Pacific, including East Africa, Indonesia, the Philippines, and the islands of the central Pacific. They are commonly found hovering above sandy areas near their burrows, feeding on zooplankton carried by ocean currents. Carnivorous by nature, Decorated Firefish thrive on a varied diet of finely chopped seafood, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and other high-quality frozen or prepared marine foods. Frequent small feedings help maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health. Considered completely reef-safe, the Decorated Firefish poses no threat to corals or ornamental invertebrates, making it a beautiful and peaceful addition to reef aquariums of all sizes.
