The Purple Dottyback is a bold and vividly colored reef fish prized for its intense coloration, hardy nature, and engaging personality. Adults display a striking deep purple to magenta body often accented by a contrasting yellow or golden tail, creating one of the most eye-catching combinations among marine aquarium fish. Despite their small size, these fish are highly active and confident, frequently patrolling rockwork and crevices with surprising boldness. An aquarium with abundant live rock, caves, and defined territories is essential, as Purple Dottybacks naturally claim and defend small areas within the reef structure. This species typically reaches about 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length and is best maintained in aquariums of 20 gallons or larger. Purple Dottybacks are generally semi-aggressive and may display territorial behavior toward similar-sized or similarly shaped fish, particularly in smaller aquariums. A secure, tight-fitting lid is recommended, as they may occasionally jump when startled or during aggressive interactions. In the wild, Pictichromis porphyreus inhabits coral reefs, lagoon edges, and rubble zones throughout the western Pacific, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and surrounding island regions. They are commonly found darting in and out of reef crevices where they hunt small crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates. Carnivorous by nature, this species thrives on a varied diet consisting of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and other high-quality frozen or prepared marine foods. Regular feedings help maintain vibrant coloration, strong health, and natural territorial behavior. Generally considered reef-safe, the Purple Dottyback typically does not harm corals or sessile invertebrates, though it may harass smaller tankmates in confined spaces. Its brilliant coloration, hardy disposition, and active behavior make it a popular and striking addition to appropriately planned reef aquariums.
