The Cryptic Six Line Wrasse is a small, peaceful, and highly attractive reef fish prized for its delicate coloration, active personality, and compatibility with community reef aquariums. Adults display a soft pink to peach-colored body adorned with fine magenta and reddish horizontal streaks that extend from the head to the tail, creating an elegant and understated appearance. Despite its diminutive size, this species is constantly active, spending much of its day weaving through rockwork and coral branches in search of tiny crustaceans and other microfauna. An aquarium with abundant live rock, caves, and mature reef structure is essential, providing both security and a natural source of supplemental food. This species typically reaches about 2.5 inches (6 cm) in length and is best maintained in aquariums of 20 gallons or larger. Cryptic Six Line Wrasses are exceptionally peaceful and generally coexist well with a wide variety of reef-safe fish, making them an excellent choice for nano and community reef systems. A secure, tight-fitting lid is recommended, as this species can jump when startled. In the wild, Pseudocheilinops ataenia inhabits sheltered coral reefs and lagoon environments throughout the western Pacific, including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and surrounding island regions. They are commonly found among branching corals and rubble zones where they hunt for tiny benthic invertebrates while remaining close to protective cover. Carnivorous by nature, this species thrives on a varied diet consisting of copepods, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and other high-quality frozen or prepared marine foods. Frequent feedings help support healthy growth, vibrant coloration, and natural foraging behavior. Considered completely reef-safe, the Cryptic Six Line Wrasse poses no threat to corals or ornamental invertebrates and is often valued for its gentle disposition and ability to help control small nuisance pests. Its charming personality, manageable size, and beautiful coloration make it an outstanding addition to peaceful reef aquariums of all sizes.
