Description

Siganus punctatus

The Goldspotted Rabbitfish is a peaceful species admired for its striking coloration and natural algae-grazing behavior. Its pale bluish-grey to whitish body is covered with numerous shimmering gold spots that create a vibrant, eye-catching appearance that stands out in any aquarium. In the wild, Goldspotted Rabbitfish inhabit clear lagoons and seaward reefs, typically at depths ranging from 1 to 40 meters. Juveniles often form schools, while adults are usually seen in pairs. They are herbivorous, feeding primarily on benthic algae, seagrasses, and macroalgae, helping maintain reef health. In captivity, this species thrives in well-established aquariums with plenty of live rock and open swimming space for grazing. While generally reef-safe, they may occasionally nip at soft corals or LPS if not provided sufficient algae-based foods, such as nori, Spirulina, or other vegetable matter. Frequent, small feedings help maintain their health, coloration, and natural grazing behavior. Growing to about 12 inches (40 cm) in length, the Goldspotted Rabbitfish is both a visually striking and functional addition to community and reef aquariums, offering vibrant coloration and effective natural algae control.
