The Pajama Cardinalfish is a peaceful and eye-catching reef fish admired for its unique coloration, gentle temperament, and ease of care. Adults display a distinctive combination of patterns and colors, featuring a greenish-yellow head with bold black markings, a silvery body covered in orange-red spots, and bright red eyes that make them instantly recognizable in the aquarium. Their calm swimming behavior and striking appearance make them a favorite among both beginner and experienced marine aquarists. An aquarium with plenty of live rock, caves, overhangs, and sheltered areas will help these fish feel secure and encourage natural behavior. This species typically reaches about 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length and is best maintained in aquariums of 20 gallons or larger. Pajama Cardinalfish are generally peaceful and can be kept singly, as bonded pairs, or in small groups when adequate space is provided. In the wild, Sphaeramia nematoptera inhabits sheltered lagoons, seagrass beds, and protected coral reef environments throughout the western Pacific, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and northern Australia. They are often found hovering among sea urchin spines, branching corals, and other protective structures where they can avoid predators while remaining close to feeding areas. Carnivorous by nature, this species readily accepts a varied diet consisting of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or prepared marine foods. Regular feedings help maintain vibrant coloration, healthy growth, and overall vitality. Considered completely reef-safe, the Pajama Cardinalfish does not harm corals or ornamental invertebrates, making it an excellent choice for peaceful reef aquariums where its distinctive appearance and calm demeanor can be fully appreciated.
