Description
The Imperator Angel is extremely popular in the aquarium trade due to their unique patterns and hardiness. They generally feed on algae, sponges, soft corals and benthic organisms in the wild, which is why they are not considered reef safe. Since adults grow to be over a foot in size they will need at least 250 gallons, but you can get away with smaller aquariums as juveniles. Like most large angelfish the Imperator will go through a complete color morph from juvenile to adult. Juvenile are mostly black with semi-circular white stripes. Adults will develop bright yellow stripes, blueface that resembles a mask and a bright yellow tail. They are found in the Indo-Pacific and Great Barrier Reef up to 100 meters deep. Juveniles are found under ledges or protected areas within reefs. While adults inhabit coral rich areas of reefs and lagoons.
