Triggerfish

Triggerfish have a distinct diamond shape body with a strong pointed mouth. Triggerfish ​​are most commonly known for being aggressive. However, some species are considered only semi-aggressive. Triggerfish are not reef safe and will pick on corals. It’s best to keep triggerfish in a fish-only with live rock aquarium, with tank mates of similar size and temperament. Do not house with smaller or timid fish, or they can become a snack! Keep your triggerfish in a large saltwater aquarium of at least 180 gallons, as aggression between fish can be amplified in smaller tanks.

Triggerfish have a unique behavior and like to wedge themselves headfirst into holes and cracks in the rocks. To make your triggerfish feel at home, ensure the rockwork aquascape has ample hiding places and sturdy solid construction. For maintaining your triggerfish in good health, we recommend providing a varied diet of meaty foods multiple times a day. Since they have teeth, the trigger must also be fed foods with a shell to keep them from overgrowing. You can buy frozen foods like a clam on the half shelf so the triggerfish can work on removing the food from it and wear down their teeth in the process.  A cautionary note, all triggers have these sharp teeth and may bite when they feel threatened. A good time to work in aquariums with triggerfish is after feeding.

The clown triggerfish is a popular fish in a saltwater aquariums. This is because of their bold coloration, extreme durability, and outgoing personality. Triggerfish need lots of room to swim around, and it’s essential to know how big they will grow at adult size. World Wide Corals sells a wide variety of triggerfish starting at only a few inches long. However, triggerfish can grow to an adult size of 10” and need ample swimming space. Full-grown adults of this trigger will need at least 180 gallons; however, juveniles can be housed in smaller aquariums.
