Saltwater angelfish have a striking appearance, typically with bright colors and patterns. They are among the most desirable fish in a saltwater aquarium, especially in larger reef tanks. When introducing a new saltwater angelfish to your aquarium, check fish compatibility. Angelfish can be aggressive and territorial to others with a similar body shape and size. Some aquarists with larger reef tanks will add multiple saltwater angelfish simultaneously to reduce aggression. Saltwater angelfish are also known to nip on coral polyps and clams. In a larger aquarium, these little nips may go unnoticed, while in a smaller aquarium, this could become a problem if your saltwater angelfish get a taste for coral.
Saltwater angelfish are recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists with large enough tanks and good water quality. Most saltwater angelfish grow between 3-12 inches, with the largest species growing upwards of 20 inches in length. For our largest fish, like the Imperator Angelfish, we recommend an aquarium of at least 250 gallons, while for smaller pygmy angelfish, we recommend a minimum of 25 gallons. It’s important to research which species of fish you want and how big it will end up.
