Description

Caracanthus maculatus

The Gumdrop Coral Croucher is a peaceful, reef-safe species admired for its unique, speckled appearance and cryptic behavior. Its small, laterally compressed body is pale with numerous dark red to brown spots, giving it a “gumdrop” look, while its velvety skin and rounded head add to its distinctive charm. Closely related to scorpionfish and lionfish, this species brings subtle character to any reef aquarium. In the wild, Gumdrop Coral Crouchers are typically found among the branches of Pocillopora and Stylophora corals in shallow reef areas, where they use their robust pectoral fins to navigate and cling to coral while avoiding strong currents. They are shy and secretive, often retreating into coral branches for protection. In captivity, they thrive in well-established aquariums with plenty of live rock and branching corals for shelter. While generally peaceful, they may show mild aggression toward conspecifics in smaller tanks, so they are best kept singly or as a mated pair. They feed on small live or frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, copepods, and other microcrustaceans. Frequent, small feedings help maintain their health and natural behavior. Growing to about 2 inches (5 cm) in length, the Gumdrop Coral Croucher is an intriguing and attractive addition to nano and reef aquariums, offering both unique visual appeal and fascinating, natural behavior.
