Description

Nemateleotris lavandula

The recently described Nemateleotris lavandula is often mistaken for Nemateleotris helfrichi due to its similar coloration. Also known as the Marshall Islands Firefish or Lavender Blushed Dartfish, this species is distinguished from helfrichi, which is found in French Polynesia and the Cook Islands, whereas lavandula is found elsewhere. Firefish are small, colorful, and have great personalities, making them excellent additions to most aquariums. The lavandula species prefers aquariums with plenty of caves, cracks, and resting areas, as they can be shy and will dart into hiding or jump when startled. Ensure your tank has a tight-fitting lid to prevent escapes. Their lavender color fades towards the tail, and they have a bright yellow face and head. Helfrichi Firefish are carnivores that should be fed multiple times daily with a high-protein diet of small marine flesh pieces or prepared foods for carnivores. These gobies can grow up to 2 inches and are best housed in aquariums of 30 gallons or larger.
