Description
Platax pinnatus
Batfish belonging to this genus will need plenty of open swim area and can quickly outgrow their aquarium. They are a slow moving species with tall finnage and should not be housed with fish that may nip at their fins. Captive-bred fish are known to be easier to keep and feed, to ensure success with these beautiful fish it is recommended to add small batfish to the home aquarium. The Pinnatus Batfish showcases a rich black coloration trimmed with orange. As they mature their color will fade to a duller color. Pinnatus Batfish are carnivores and benefit from a diverse diet consisting of frozen and prepared marine foods for carnivores such as scallops, live shrimp, mussels and are especially fond of earthworms. Regular small feeding sessions, multiple times a day to ensure optimum health. These Batfish can grow up to 18 inches. It's recommended to house them in aquariums of 250 gallons or larger, preferrably a tall aquarium. Due to their body shape aquarium decorations should be limited as they may harm the Batfish's fins. In their natural habitat, Platax Batfish are commonly found near coastal lagoons, juveniles near mangrove or brackish waters. Adults on steep reef slopes under overhangs typically at depths of up to 100 feet.
