Description
Macropharyngodon bipartitus (female)
The Vermiculate Leopard Wrasse is an exquisite wrasse that would be a perfect candidate for the expert aquarist. Its peaceful behavior and bright coloration make it very popular by hobbyists. They can be added into an aquarium in a group. Like many other wrasses, these have the ability to change sex, so the most dominant fish in the group will become the male. They prefer established aquariums, so they can hunt small invertebrates in the substrate. It is strongly advised that the aquarium has s tight fitting lid because they are known to jump out. Their diet should be varied and include frozen meaty foods like brine shrimp, marine pellets and flakes. On occasion a seaweed strip should be added to add variety to their diet. This wrasse has a high metabolism so they should be fed several small meals rather than two large meals a day. They have an adult size of 5”, which makes them ideal for smaller aquariums. The females have a white body with mottled colorations of orange, yellow and brown with blue spots. The males are a bright green and blue with black outlines that form a beautiful pattern. The Vermiculate Leopard Wrasse are found in the Western Indian Ocean inhabiting lagoons and sheltered seaward reefs up to 30 meters deep.
