Description
Tangs are also known as surgeon fish because they have a sharp spine that looks like a scalpel near their caudal (tail) fin that they use protection, be sure to use caution when handling. Like other tangs, these can be aggressive towards other fish that look similar. Fish from the genus Zebrasoma are more likely to tolerate other Zebrasoma tangs in aquariums that are large enough and they should be added to the aquarium at the same time.
The Purple Tang can grow up to 10” in size, so they will need ample amounts of swimming room. Full grown adults of this tang will need around 150 gallons; however, you can get away with smaller aquariums when they are juveniles. If adding a group of Purples then the aquarium will need to be larger. Adults are often found in small groups in coral rich reefs up to about 20 meters deep. They are only found in the Western Indian Ocean from the Red Sea to the Persian Gulf.
