Anthias

Anthias are vibrant, social fish that create a captivating display in any reef aquarium. Known for their bright colors and active behavior, they thrive when kept in groups, forming a harem of at least six to nine individuals. Typically, one fish will transition into a male, and a male can be added for every four or five females, enhancing the visual harmony of the group.

Ideal for aquarists with larger tanks, Anthias require an aquarium of at least 125 gallons with plenty of swimming space and hiding places. Their natural habitats are deep reef slopes and coastal drop-offs, with some species like the Bimaculatus Anthias found up to 100 meters deep in the Indo-West Pacific, while others, like the Barbonius Anthias, are discovered near caves at depths of up to 300 meters in the Indo-Pacific.

The stunning Fathead Sunburst Anthias from Fiji, with its unique coloration, also makes a striking addition. Found in the Western Pacific, these Anthias inhabit coral reefs up to 70 meters deep and require a tank of at least 70 gallons.

Due to their high metabolism, Anthias should be fed several times a day, ideally with automated feeders offering a mix of pelletized foods, frozen marine fare, and small chopped meaty foods. This ensures they receive the nutrition they need for their active lifestyles. Males will often protect and interact with the females, creating a dynamic and beautiful display in the aquarium.

Whether it's the Pictilis Anthias, which favors steep reef slopes in the Western Pacific, or the smaller Purple Pygmy Anthias, which requires an aquarium of 75 gallons or larger, each species adds its unique charm to the tank. Their peaceful nature and reef-safe behavior make Anthias an excellent addition to community tanks, bringing color and movement to the tranquil reef environment.
